While women empowerment foundations and activists are driving propelling progress towards protecting women and girls, society still has a long way to go when it comes to the different forms of harassment.
One form of harassment a lot of women face almost on a day-to-day basis is street harassment.
This is more commonly known as catcalling and usually consists of unwanted comments, gestures, wolf-whistlings, exposure, following, persistent sexual advances women get in public areas such as streets, shopping malls, and public transportation.
In some instances, catcalling involves honking car horns at passing women, flashing vulgar gestures, self-exposure to a woman, and even inappropriate grabbing.
While many have normalized this form of abuse to an extent that it’s even a laughable experience, nothing changes the fact that it is still sexual harassment and by law, offenders can get arrested if reported.
Most catcalling men would dispute in their defence that their comments are purely complementary and should not be considered as consequential, but this type of harassment can easily instil fear and even leave long-lasting psychological effects.
Furthermore, its high time society takes a stand on this form of sexual abuse.
A recent study conducted by an unnamed source shows disturbing experiences women go through on a normal day on the streets. From men creepingly asking her out to some stalking her in the middle of the day.
After ten hours of walking silently through Manhattan streets in the US, the lady exposes the distasteful gestures and verbal harassment she gets while wearing tight jeans and a crewneck t-shirt.
