Malawi’s First Lady Monica Chakwera has accepted the request by the Association of Persons with Albinism in Malawi (APAM) to be its patron.

According to reports the Nation al Coordinator of APAM Overstone Kondowe who also served as the association’s president met with the First Lady at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe and made the request.

Following the First Lady’s acceptance, incumbent APAM president Ian Simbota said there is a positive and timely development.

“The acceptance of the first lady as Patron for APAM, is therefore a positive and timely development which will help increase global spotlight on the welfare, protection and promoting of rights of persons with albinism,” said Simbota.

According to Simbota, one of the challenges facing PWAs is lack of visibility, there are few in public spaces hence their concerns remain shut up.

“Having Malawi as the only government in Africa and beyond where we have a First lady at the helm of the leadership of the organization for Persons with Albinism is a very positive example towards promoting the rights of persons with albinism,” said Kondowe.
