Tourism Minister Michael Usi has fired warning shots to cottage owners dotted along the lakeshore to stop providing accomodation services to tourists because they don’t pay taxes to Government.
Usi said cottages “are not licenced to operate as hospitality services providers. They must stop forthwith.”
The Minister, who was on a familiarisation tour of the Lake Malawi national park at Cape Maclear in Mangochi, told MBC that the Government through his ministry will deal with any cottage owner providing accomodation services to tourists because they “steal from Government as they do not pay taxes as resthouses, lodges and hotels do.”
The park was in 2015 declared a UNESCO world heritage site due to its presence of cichlids, the ornamental fish only found in Malawi.
