Chimwemwe Masanje of Traditional Authority Kayembe in Dowa was arrested on Thursday after a failed attempt to deposit the fake K2000 banknotes with a suspicious Airtel Money agent in the district.

According to Spokesperson for Mponela Police Kaitano Lubrino, the banknotes will be sent to the Reserve Bank of Malawi for examination of their authenticity.

“Counterfeit money is an imitation currency produced without the legal sanction of the state, usually in a deliberate attempt to imitate that currency so as to deceive its recipient,” he added.
