A 40-year-old woman has died and 15 other others sustained injuries after a minibus they were traveling in overturned in Chikwawa on Sunday.

Two people, including a baby, escaped unhurt in an accident which happened at Kalima Village along Ngabu-Nchalo M1 road.

Chikwawa Police Station, Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Dickson Matemba told Malawi News Agency (Mana) Monday morning that the people, who were in a Nissan Caravan minibus, registration number MN8021 Nissan, that was being driven by 32-year-old, Alex Milis, were on their way from a funeral ceremony.

“The minibus’s rear tyre burst and, due to speeding, the driver failed to control the vehicle and it swerved to extreme left where it overturned.

“Due to the impact, one passenger, Enala Andilade,  40, of Kaphesesi Village Traditional Authority Ndamera in Nsanje District, sustained severe head injury and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Ngabu Rural Hospital,” stated Matemba

He further said 15 other passengers sustained different degrees of injuries and some were transferred to Chikwawa District Hospital for further treatment.

Meanwhile, police are hunting for the driver who is at large and are appealing to all drivers to observe rules and regulations to avoid the similar  accident.
