Following a growing concern for illegal vending in the country’s roads, Lilongwe City Council (LCC) has started off by demolishing vendors stalls along Malangalanga Road

According to LCC spokesperson Tamara Chafunya, the above is  mandated by the council’s by-laws that all those that are conducting vending are to do so in designated markets.

Prior to the incident, the Minister of Local Government and Rural Development, Lingson Belekanyama told The Daily Times that the government has come up with measures to remove vendors from the cities’ streets. According to the minister, space will be allocated for vendors where they can be operating from so that there is sanity in the streets.

The call to remove vendors has been supported by residents, but opposed by the vendors, as the city councils have been back and forth with the vendors on the same development.
