Dedza Senior Resident Magistrate Court has sentenced 20 year old Friday Saidi and 21 year old Yamikani Edward to 14 years imprisonment each for Robbery with violence.
The court through state prosecutor, Sergeant Daniel Katsonga, heard that during the night of September 4, 2020, the two robbed a motorcycle belonging to Mr Maungena Jason.
He further told the court that, Jason was at Mphathi Market in Dedza District and he was approached by a certain customer who wanted to go to Njonja trading centre.
Upon seeing that it was abit late, Jason told his friend to accompany him to drop the customer at Njonja.
When they reached Mchenga village near the graveyard, they saw three people armed with panga knives and bamboo sticks who block their way and beat them up and run away with the motor cycle.
The nearby angry villagers managed to catch Friday Saidi and Yamikani Edward by following the marks of the motorcycle and handed them over to Njonja Police Unit.
When they appeared in court, Friday and Yamikani pleaded guilty.
In mitigation, both Friday and Yamikani pleaded with the court for leniency saying they’re first offenders and breadwinners to their families.
However, prosecutor Katsonga asked the court for a stiff sentence since people are loosing life and property from such conduct.
When passing sentence, Senior Resident Magistrate Clemence Chamwenda conquered with the state and sentenced Friday and Yamikani to 14 years imprisonment each.
Friday Saidi hails from Kambanje village in Traditional Authority Maliteni in Domue Mozambique while Yamikani Edward hails from Mzimu village in Traditional Authority Mdumbu in Domue Mozambique.
