President Donald Trump has refused to commit to a peaceful transfer of power if he loses November’s US elections, he said at a news conference at the White House on Wednesday.
“I’ve been complaining very strongly about the ballots, and the ballots are a disaster,” Mr Trump said.
“Get rid of the ballots, and you’ll have a very – you’ll have a very peaceful – there won’t be a transfer, frankly, there’ll be a continuation,” he threatened.
His stance is not new to dictators worldwide. But to hear it coming from the US – which boasts the most democratic country in the world – dagnabbit!
This is not the first time Mr Trump threatened undemocratic means of sharing power in the US.
Trump’s sentiments were being referred to his much-disputed claims that mail-in ballots are vulnerable to fraud.
He believes that the Democrat Joe Biden, who’s currently leading in national opinion polls stands at an advantage through the mail-in ballot voting to win the November US elections.
Mr Trump also said he believed the election result could end up in the US Supreme Court – “win, lose or draw”.
