A Malawian man in Dowa district has died by committing suicide after his wife failed to provide him a hundred Kwacha note that he asked.

Mponela police station public relations officer, Sergeant Macpatson Msadala has confirmed of the incident and identified the now deceased as Aubrey Nelson (20) who committed the crime on the night of September 27-28.

According to Macpatson Msadala, the two were staying in a rented room at Mix Point Bar at Mponela Trading Centre where the wife was plying her business as a sex-worker following the couple’s financial challenges.

“It is reported that the man’s parents never approved of the marriage and so offered no support to him. Being jobless, the wife offered to engage herself in prostitution as a means of survival and she was staying in one of the rooms at the said bar,” he stated.

On that night, the two got drunk together and the deceased asked his wife for K100 of which she didn’t provide.

The deceased is said to have complained of being ill-treated before they both went to sleep.

However, the wife was shocked after she woke up in the middle of the night and found the body of the man hanging from the roof of their room.

The matter was reported to authorities and the body was taken to Mponela Rural Hospital where a postmortem revealed the death was due to strangulation caused by the Chitenje he used to hang himself with.

The deceased, Aubrey hailed from Chidothi village in the area of Traditional Authority Mponela in Dowa District.
