Parliamentary deliberations have been called off today to allow lawmakers attend the burial of Senior Sergeant at Arms, late Lieutenant Charles Mlongoti.

Mlongoti died on Saturday at the Adventist Hospital in Lilongwe after a short illness.

Parliament spokesperson, Ian Mwenye, has confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

Mwenye said the House will resume sitting on Tuesday, October 6 2020.

Born in 1978, Mlongoti joined Parliament in 2012, a year after his early retired from the MDF. He is survived by three children.

When entering the Chamber, the Speaker is preceeded by a Sergeant At Arms. The Sergeant carries the mace, a metal rod stumped with royal arms. The roles of a Sergeant-At-Arms includes enforcing the commands of a legislative body such as Parliament and the preservation of its internal order.
