A 24-year-old Zimbabwean man from  Ntabenende area in Esigodini was arrested after he allegedly raped his neighbor’s wife over a debt owed by her husband.

According to iHarare, the man who can not be named for ethical reasons raped his neighbors wife over a R50 – worth over two thousand Kwacha – debt which her husband owed him.

The man was not asked to plead when he appeared before Gwanda magistrate, Miss Lerato Nyathi facing a rape charge.

The incident happened on August 14 at around 9 PM after the accused went to the complainant’s house to demand the R50 debt her husband owed him. Prosecuting, Miss Ethel Mahachi told the court that:

“On 14 August at around 7 PM the accused person went to the complainant’s homestead looking for her husband as he owed him R50 which he had promised to have paid during the previous month. The complainant advised the accused person that her husband was not around as he had traveled to visit some relatives.”

“At around 9 PM, the accused person returned to the complainant’s homestead while drunk and demanded to see her husband. The complainant indicated that he was not around but the accused person refused to accept the excuse and started demanding his money from the complainant. The complainant pointed out that she didn’t have the money and advised the accused person to leave and return when her husband was back.”

Even after the complainant informed the accused that her husband wasn’t home the accused person refused to leave and told her that he would remain there until he received his money. He allegedly forced his way into the complainant’s house and went on to grab and push the complainant onto the bed before raping her once.

After committing the offense, the accused person told the complainant that she had paid up her husband’s debt and he left the house.

After he left, the complainant rushed to a neighbor’s house and narrated what had happened. The matter was immediately reported to the police resulting in the arrest of the accused person.

He was remanded in custody to October 19.
