Pollster Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) on Monday announced that the threshold for determining of a winner for both parliamentary and local government elections will be set at 50 plus 1 vote of the votes cast.
MEC Chairperson Justice Chifundo Kachale said in a statement that MEC had considered provisions of Sections 96 (5) of the Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Act and Section 80 (5) of the Local Government Elections Act and the intrepretation of the word “majority” by the Constitutional Court in the historic presidential elections case to arrive at this decision.
“Any candidate or political party aggrieved by these decisions may appeal to the High Court of Malawi,” Kachale added
