Police in Dowa have arrested seven people during a sweeping exercise conducted between the night of Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

Sub Inspector Gladson M’bumpha, Dowa Police Public Relations Officer (PRO) said the exercise was conducted at Dowa Turn Off, Dzaleka Refugee Camp, Chezi and Mvera Trading Centres aimed at reducing crime in the district.

“The arrested suspects were on a police wanted list in Dowa District. Their ages ranges from 16 to 56 will answer charges ranging from operating a clinic without a licence, defilement, unlawful wounding, arson and burglary and theft.” Disclosed M’bumpha

In a related development, a 43-year-old man in Dowa has hanged himself to the roof of his kitchen over unknown reasons.

According to M’bumpha, the deceased Pilirani Chika of Mengwe 1 Village in Traditional Authority Mkukula in Dowa District committed suicide on Tuesday afternoon at Mengwe 1 Village.

“It is reported that the deceased brother Haswell Chika received information that his brother Pilirani Chika had hanged himself to the roof of his kitchen.

Upon receipt of the matter, he rushed to the scene and confirmed about the incident and upon being questioned, the deceased wife expressed ignorance to have family disagreements for the past days.” Explained the Dowa Police PRO

He indicated that police took the body to Dzaleka Health Centre where postmortem conducted revealed that death was caused due to suffocation secondary to strangulation.

“No foul play suspected.” He added adding; “Police in Dowa have expressed worry over the increase in suicide cases and advised the general public to refrain from committing suicide rather than seeking guidance from relevant authorities.
