The Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) is expected to assess the claims by the Human Right Defenders Coalition (HRDC) that former Minister Charles Mchacha abused his office during the reign of former President Peter Mutharika.

ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba confirmed of the development in an interview with the press.

Matemba said the bureau will look into its content today.

Recently HRDC led by its chairperson Gift Trapence informed the graft busting body accusing the Lilongwe Water Board of buying furniture for Mchacha while serving as Deputy Minister for Water Development, describing the act as abuse of office which need to be probed.

HRDC also claimed LWB paid for Mchacha’s honeymoon as well as his travel and hotel accommodation on personal and political campaign trips.

“We have received allegations that Lilongwe Water Board procured furniture for Hon. Charles Mchacha who was Deputy Minister in the Ministry responsible for water.

“It is also alleged that Lilongwe Water Board also paid for the honeymoon of Hon. Mchacha,” reads part the letter addressed to ACB Director General Reyneck Matemba.

Added the letter: “It is also alleged that Lilongwe Water Board used to pay for the cost of travel and hotel accommodation for Hon. Mchacha including on personal trips as well as on campaign trips across the country.

“We appeal to ACB to investigate these allegations.”
