Leader and founder of Enlightened Christian Gathering Shepherd Bushiri has left South Africa despite bail conditions they were given by the Pretoria Magistrate Court few weeks ago.
Bushiri and his wife Prophetess Mary Bushiri were arrested by the Hawks last month over the charges of fraud and money laundering and they spent over two weeks in police custody.
When granting the couple bail, Pretoria Magistrate revoked travelling documents belonging to the couple and ordering them not to leave the boarders of the Rainbow Nation as some of the conditions of the bail.
Writing on his official Facebook page, Bushiri cited security reasons as the main reason prompted him and his wife to leave the country for Malawi.
According to Bushiri, there have been attempts to have the couple killed and that reporting the matter to the authorities has proved futile as nothing has been done to assure them of their safety hence the decision to leave the country.
“Our coming to Malawi, hence, is a tactical withdrawal from the Republic of South Africa solely meant to preserve our lives,” Bushiri said.
The self-styled man of God believes that they are innocent, however, this cannot be proved if their lives is not preserved “we have to be alive to testify to our innocence.”
“These attempts have been heightened with recent spates of arrest and detentions that we felt the only way for us to clear our names before the law is to ensure that our lives are preserved.” Bushiri said.
The strangled prophet was quick to clear that his coming to Malawi is not an act of running from being tried, he therefore said that all he want is that his family’s name is cleared in a justice system in fair, impartial and just.
“As such I want to make it clear, our coming to Malawi is not an act of running away from being tried. Not at all,” Bushiri said.
He has however asked the South African government of his family’s full protection once he goes back to the Rainbow Nation and that his case will be tried and finished without any interference.
Bushiri has also demanded that officers working on his case be changed as he is claiming that the ones handling the case are responsible of victimizing his family and that he once filed a complaint against them, according to Bushiri, he feels that if the same officers continues handling his case he will not be able to get justice he deserves.
He further called on the Malawi government to intervene on his fate.
