As is still unclear how leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary left South Africa after their traveling documents were confiscated, Malawi’s State House has distanced itself from social media rumors that President Lazarus Chakwera might have helped the couple.
After the news broke out that Bushiri and his wife are in the country, most Malawians on social media rushed to conclude that President Chakwera aided the couple to flee the country considering that Malawi’s first citizen was in the Rainbow National for a state visit.
Presidential spokesperson, Brian Banda, said it is not true that the Bushiris boarded the same plane with president Chakwera.
“The allegations that Prophet Shepherd Bushiri came on the same flight with the president is false,” Banda said.
Banda further trashed rumors that President Chakwera held talks with South African president Cyril Ramaphosa over Bushiri and his wife situation.
Chakwera paid a South Africa a two day visit in which according to state house the visit was aimed at strengthening the relationship between the two countries.
Coincidentally, Bushiri and his wife arrived in the country on the same day president Chakwera arrived from South Africa after a couple hours of delay which prompted social media users to conclude that the delay was caused due to the plans of helping Bushiris to leave the country for Malawi.
Bushiri and his wife are answering charges of fraud and money laundering in South Africa.
