South Africa’s Independent Police Investigative Department (IPID) has confirmed that leader of Enlightened Christian Gathering (ECG) Prophet Shepherd Bushiri filed a complaint against police officers in 2018.
According to a press statement seen by this publication, Bushiri, through his lawyers in South Africa opened a corruption case and cash extortion by the alleged police officers in Sunnyside, Pretoria in the Rainbow Nation.
“It is alleged that the police officers investigating several allegations of rape against Mr Bushiri were trying to extort money from Bushiri so that they make his rape charges disappear,” reads part of the statement.
However, IPID said it required Bushiri to provide crucial information about the allegations and acquire witness statement of which was seen not happening due to the busy schedule of the Prophet.
“IPID required Bushiri to provide crucial information about the allegations and to acquire witness statements but Mr Bushiri’s non availability due to his busy schedule has been giving IPID Investigators a challenge to proceed with this case,” said Ndileka Cola, IPID spokesperson.
Cola added; “As such, his poor co-operation, busy schedule and non-availability has stalled the investigation process as crucial information required to proceed with the investigation process is not forthcoming from him as the victim in this matter.”
According to IPID Bushiri has been served with feedback on the matter and that he is well aware that investigators will proceed with his case as soon as he co-operates fully with investigation process.
Bushiri has been complaining that police officers who are handling his cases are the ones he reported them of being corrupt adding that he will not be able to get fair trial.
Meanwhile, Bushiri and his wife have fled South Africa and are in the country against bail conditions they were given by the Pretoria Magistrate Court that the couple should not cross the boarders of South Africa.
