The Speaker of Malawi Parliament, Right Honourable Catherine Gotani Hara, MP, has today officially opened the Dowa Children’s Parliament at the Parliament Building in Lilongwe.
Speaking during the official opening ceremony, the Speaker said the whole purpose of getting the child parliamentarians to come to Parliament is that the children are able to appreciate what goes on at Parliament.
The Speaker added that the children will also be deliberating on issues that affect them and they will come up with resolutions which will they be given to Parliament for consideration.
“Children’s Parliament is quite important because it helps the child parliamentarians express their views on quite a number of issues. The children already have an agenda and once they present the resolutions, Parliament will take the issues forward,” said the Speaker.
The Children’s Parliament has been organized by Plan International in collaboration with When The Saints and World Vision among others.
The Children’s Parliament has drawn participants from seven Traditional Authorities in Dowa district.
The sitting of the Children’s Parliament is expected to end on Thursday, 19th November, 2020.
