Two people have been killed in road accident in Nsanje after being hit by a motor vehicle on Tuesday morning along the Khulubvi Highway.
Nsanje Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sub Inspector Agnes Zalakoma confirmed the development in an interview on Wednesday.
The police publicist identified the deceased as Moffat Bilinjala, 27 of Chipakuza Village and 24-year-old Samuel Fote of Mkango Village, both from Traditional Authority (T.A.) Tengani in the district.
Zalakoma said it is reported the driver of the motor vehicle registration number NA 5143 Toyota Hiace minibus, Robert Godfrey, 33, of Thudzu Village in T.A. Masache in Chikwawa, was driving from Bangula direction towards Nsanje Boma with one passenger on board, a conductor.
“Upon arrival at Dakamau’s Residence, due to over speeding and fatigue, the driver lost control of the vehicle as he was negotiating the left corner.
“He then encroached into the opposite lane where he collided with the oncoming motorcyclist (Bilinjala) who carried a pillion passenger (Fote),” he said.
“Due to the impact, the motorcyclist and the pillion passenger died on the spot due to multiple fractures and severe loss of blood.
“The motorcycle and the vehicle were extensively damaged. The driver of the vehicle fled leaving it at the scene,” said Zalakoma.
According to Zalakoma, the police have arrested the driver of the vehicle and that he will appear before court soon to answer the charge of causing death by reckless driving.
