The government has ordered the immediate closure of a steel manufacturing company in Lilongwe, Huaminsteel, for failure to follow regulations.

Minister of Lands Kezzie Msukwa ordered its closure during an impromptu visit to the factory over the weekend accompanied by the Industry Minister Roy Kachale.

According to Msukwa, the company, owned by Chinese nationals, defied a government order to stop steel production in August this year.

The government ordered the company to relocate to plot 54/17 from Area 55 which is not an industrial area but zoned for other commercial purposes.

The Malawi News Agency reports that the Minister further ordered Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi Limited (ESCOM) to disconnect power supply to the factory to halt its operations.
