A passenger died and three others sustained serious injuries in a fatal road accident that occurred in Nkhata Bay District at Kanduli area.
The deceased was identified as James Banda of Kowelani Village Masasa area Traditional Authority (T/A) Kabunduli in the district.
James and 39 others were on November 29, 2020 on a trip to Nkhata Bay from Mzuzu where they wanted to play football and netball games.
They boarded a motor vehicle registration number MZ 9356, 4 tonner Mercedes Benz which was being driven by Gerald Banda aged 33 of Chigodi Village T/A Santhe in Kasungu District.
As the vehicle was cruising down Kanduli slope, it developed a fault with its break system such that the acceleration velocity increased.
The driver made his efforts possible to control the vehicle, unfortunately as it reached a left bend it swerved from one side to the other and back and later fell on the road.
Following the impact, one passenger got severe cut wound and died on the spot as it was confirmed at Nkhata Bay District Hospital.
Two passengers sustained serious head injuries while one had a fractured left arm. These have been admitted at the hospital.
The rest of the passengers sustained minor bruises including driver and have been treated as out patients.
The motor vehicle had its wind screen and drivers door shutter damaged.
Gerald Banda (driver) was detained as further investigations as to the cause of the accident are underway.
