President Donald Trump’s bid to overturn the presidential election results were dealt a blow when the state of Georgia recertified the results in which former Vice President Joe Biden is the winner.
According to Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, who is also a Republican like President Trump, the state confirmed the results after a second recount of the votes. The recount reaffirmed Georgia’s assertation that Biden beat President Donald Trump by roughly 12,000 votes.
Speaking at a news conference, Raffensperger said,
“It’s been 34 days since the election on Nov. 3. We have now counted legally cast ballots three times and the results remain unchanged.”
Also Monday, a federal judge dismissed a lawsuit filed on behalf of would-be Republican presidential electors by former Trump lawyer Sidney Powell. The suit alleged widespread fraud and sought to decertify the results of the presidential race in Georgia, among other things.
Raffensperger called on Georgia to move forward after Sidney Powell’s lawsuit was dismissed by the courts. He went on to say that claims of stolen elections were hurting the state.
“Today is an important day for election integrity in Georgia and across the country,” Raffensperger said.
“The claims in the Kraken lawsuit prove to be as mythological as the creature for which they’re named. Georgians can now move forward knowing that their votes, and only their legal votes, were counted accurately, fairly, and reliably.”
“All this talk of a stolen election, whether it’s Stacey Abrams or the president of the United States, is hurting our state,”
Raffensperger was referring to the former Democratic gubernatorial candidate who did not concede the 2018 governor’s race to Gov. Brian Kemp (R) after losing the vote count.
President Donald Trump and his campaign team have refused to concede defeat in the Nov. 3 elections citing electoral fraud. Despite losing a number of lawsuits, the Trump campaign is confident that it will prevail in overturning the election results at the Supreme Court.
