Lightning has killed a standard five pupil at St Annies in Chilumba in Karonga district. Confirming the incident to Malawi News Agency (Mana) on Friday, Area Civil Protection Committee Vice Secretary Glad Lukhere said the incident happened when the pupils were in class and affected two pupils in process.
Lukhere identify the deceased as Charles Chawinga who died upon arrival at St Annies health center while Samuel Kaunda also a standard five pupil is currently receiving medical treatment at the hospital.
Meanwhile, Karonga Disaster and Relief Officer Shepherd Jere has describe the incident as a big loss to people of Karonga and the country at large saying the youth are the future leaders.
“It’s very sad that we have lost a young boy to lightning like that. As you may be aware, a life of person is so precious so losing it like that, it’s painful,” he said.
However, Jere said they will continue intesfying awareness campaigns on how people can prevent themselves from different disasters more especially during rains associated with lightning and thurnder.
Karonga is one of disaster prone districts in the country and according to department of metrology predicted that the district will this rainy season receive normal to above normal rains.
