Vice President Dr Saulos Chilima says the country needs quality infrastructure that can last for generations to come.

Dr Chilima was speaking earlier on Tuesday after inspecting some mega projects in Blantyre including the Blantyre City By-pass road which is being constructed by China civil construction engineering company valued at over K18 billion.

The Vice President said he is impressed with the quality and design for 97 km ring road which will be done in phases.

“Projects like these are part of the national development and we want to appreciate progress being made, challenges being faced so that we can assist to find answers to those challenges.

“What we have seen here is that the initial works have been done but the challenge is inadequate funding. In this budget the road has been allocated about K1.2 billion. If we continue to fund at that rate it will take us more years than necessary,” said the Vice President.

He was optimistic that all key stakeholders will come together to mobilize the required financial resources to fund the project and speed up its completion.

The Vice President also inspected construction works for the new Blantyre Police Station.

The facility upon its completion is expected to house modern offices for all departments in Malawi Police Service, a gymn, cafeteria and two car parking spaces.
