A 24-year-old youth has been arrested for allegedly slitting the throat of a 20-year-old college girl after she rejected his marriage proposal. The victim has been identified as 20-year-old G Asha, a native of Arasamara Street in Nadukavery near Thiruvaiyaru.

The incident took place in Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday. According to the police, the accused has been identified as R Ajith.

The girl is a final year student of Arts and Science College in Thanjavur, according to a report in Times of India.

The accused, who hails from the same area, works as an electrician. Police sources suggest that the two were friends but had a fall out recently.

The ghastly incident took place when the girl was heading to college in a bus. The man had been harassing the victim to marry him.

As the student turned down his appeal, Ajith took out a knife and slashed her neck injuring her seriously. Later, the accused tried to jump out of the bus but was caught by passersby after other passengers raised an alarm.

Later, the South Police arrested the accused. Police are making further inquiries after a complaint was filed by the victim.
