Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Member of Parliament for Blantyre City South Constituency Noel Lipipa has asked the government to consider hiking salaries for all civil servants in the country.
Lipipa said this following the hike of MPs salaries by 100 percent by the Tonse Alliance government led by Dr. Lazarus Chakwera.
“Rumblings of discontent from the citizenry have been emerging and growing louder following the pay hike for we parliamentarians amid increasing financial difficulties in the Country.
“Our teachers, doctors and nurses, civil servants, our men and women in uniform, the police service, the prison service, the judicial support staff and many others are lowly paid,” said Lipipa.
He added: “Not only do they need an increment but also their salaries should be tagged to inflation besides the dollar, in such a way that, whatever happens to fuel, inflation or the US dollar, their livelihoods should not be affected.
“That is the Malawi okomera tonse and not only us parliamentarians (MPs) and the executive alone.”
Government is yet to comment on the call.
