The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) has asked government to drop the corruption case involving former head of state Bakili Muluzi.

According to the quasi-religious group the Muluzi’s 1.7 billion kwacha case requires a political solution.

PAC’s publicist Gilford Matonga argued that the case has not yielded any results for the past 14 years other than draining public resources.

Matonga further observed that in 2020 the Tonse administration enjoyed public sympathy despite shortfalls in cabinet composition and slowness in undertaking reforms particularly in the civil service.

According to Matonga the position to have the case dropped was once presented in parliament by the Malawi Congress Party’s leader President Lazarus Chakwera while in opposition.

The 77 year old ex-leader is being tried of embezzling government funds amounting to 1.7 billion Kwacha along with his former Secretary Lynes Whiskey which is believed to be misused during his 1994-2004 presidency.
