The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has said Sergeant Andrew Chigaga of Limbe Police Station who raped a 17 year old Polytechnic Student is on Court bail and the case is set to be back in Court on January 27, 2021.

This has been said in a progress report issued by MPS, signed by National Police Spokesperson Senior Superintendent James Kadadzera.

According to Kadadzera, the victim was arrested by Chigaga on the night of December 12, 2020 in Limbe for idle and disorderly and was later brought into custody at Limbe Police Station.

“It is alleged that Chigaga did not place the suspect in the cell but took advantage of the situation and raped her. It is further alleged that he released her unconditionally the same night,” Kadadzera said.

The report continues that the following morning the matter was reported to police management at Limbe Police Station of which identification parade was conducted and Sergeant Chigaga was positively identified by the victim.

“He was immediately arrested and charged with rape and taken to court on December 17, 2020 for plea. He was granted bail by the Court ad the case was adjourned to January 27, 2021 for hearing,” Kadadzera added.

It also has been alleged that since the incident took place, the victim together with her family members have been receiving death threats from the said police officer if they wish to take the matter any further.

Kadadzera has further assured the general public that the MPS management will strive hard to have a professional and disciplined police officers adding that police officers who will go against the law will not be shielded but the law will take its course.
