As coronavirus cases are increasing at an alarming rate, government has suspended the Memorial Service of Reverend John Chilembwe which take place each and every year in Chiradzulo district.
“Government wishes to inform the general public that the Rev. John Chilembwe Memorial Service which as per tradition, was scheduled to be held on 15th January, 2021 has been suspended,” read part of the statement.
According to a statement from the Secretary to the President and Cabinet Zangazanga Chikhosi, the holiday that the Service goes along with will still be observed on January 15.
“This notwithstanding, Friday, 15 January, 2021, remains a public holiday in Malawi,” added the statement.
Government has therefore asked the general public that during this period, Rev. Chilembwe’s contribution to the country’s freedom should be honored.
Malawi has been hit hard with the second wave of the virus which has already claimed lives of two cabinet ministers.
