Leader of opposition, Kondwani Nankhumwa has called on government to set aside more measures meant to cushion Malawians from the effects of Covid-19.
The call comes amid an increase in new infections and deaths due to Covid-19.
In a statement, Nankhumwa while commending government for continuously statins measures to combat Covid-19, challenged Malawians to embrace the spirit of exercising preventive measures.
‘’ In as much as the measures have taken long to be brought to light, we can still say better late than never. I call upon all Malawians to adhere to the measures so that together we have a healthier and prosperous Malawi’’ reads part of the statement.
However, Nankhumwa has called on the leadership of President Lazarus Chakwera to channel some resources from the K17.52 billion, that government has directed the Ministry of Finance to release, towards cautionary mechanisms such as cash transfers for the ultra-poor to cushion them against the extreme economic impact of Covid-19.
The lawmaker has also called on government to utilize the National Enterprise Development Fund in making these economic decisions.
Among other things, last Sunday, President Lazarus Chakwera ordered treasury to release to CHAM money amounting to K100 million to help fight the pandemic.
He also ordered a three week closure of schools for authorities to ascertain whether it is viable to open or not.
These latest decisions follow bloated number of infections and deaths.
So far, there are 6,416 active infections and deaths stand at 321 with a total of 6,080 recoveries.
Since the first case was recorded last year, there have been up to 13,027 confirmed cases.
