The University of Malawi Council has set aside the process of de linking University of Malawi constituent colleges.
In a statement signed by Deputy University Registrar Ashanie Gawa, and addressed to all four college principals of Unima, the Council held its 117th extraordinary meeting on Wednesday 20th January 2021 where it was resolved that the process of delinking be set aside pending the functional review that will determine how the process should be conducted.
The statement further says that the decision to delink constituent colleges was ultra vires (done beyond one’s legal power or authority) and not in line with the powers of the Senate and the Council.
If the exercise is completed will see Polytechnic, a constituency college of UNIMA in Blantyre being a standalone University and Chancellor College in Zomba also a standalone University.
According to information at hand, the delinking will increase intake of the Universities in Malawi.
