Blantyre District Health Office (DHO) has said that it has run out of body bags to cover bodies of people dying from the disease as people succumbing to the pandemic are increasing on a daily basis.
Dr. Zaziwe Fatsan Gunda, District Medical Officer for Blantyre has confirmed.
According to Dr. Gunda, the situation is very worrying as more people are still dying from the disease.
“What we are doing at the moment is to disinfect the bodies and we are improvising by using plastic aprons to cover the bodies so that we do not expose the guardian or relatives from being infected by the body. But we would have loved to have the body bags because they are specifically made for that purpose.’’ Gunda said.
He has however disclosed that all other personal protective equipment such as facemasks are in full supply.
So far, Gunda has also disclosed that they are facing delays in delivering tests results to people as its laboratories are overwhelmed.
He has since appealed to government to ensure to employs Lab Technicians and Data Clerks among the 138,000 health workers it intends to employ in a bid to combat the pandemic.
