Police in Mulanje on Monday rescued two elderly women from an angry mob that accused them of practising witchcraft following a sudden death of a form four student on Sunday.

It is reported that on Sunday, January 24, 2021 the boy, Jonathan Jasi, from Songwe village Traditional Authority Njema in the district got sick and was taken to a private clinic in the district.

Upon arrival at the facility, medical personnel pronounced him dead.

This did not please some of the people from the village who mobilised themselves and accused the two women of being behind the boy’s death.

The mob pounced on the two before locking them up in a house threatening to kill them unless they bring the dead boy back to life.

Following an alert, law enforcers from Mulanje Police Station and Muloza Police Post rushed to the village and rescued the victims and took them to Mulanje District Hospital for treatment.

Police have since strongly condemned the attack and say an investigation has been launched to arrest the perpetrators.
