The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Lilongwe is today expected to start hearing a case involving Collins Magalasi, former Malawi Energy Regulatory Authority (MERA) Chief Executive Officer.

Magalasi is answering charges of fraud and abuse of office following the mismanagement of funds amounting 10 million kwacha.

It is alleged that Magalasi used the money to pay for accommodation for some officials belonging to the former ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) who were in Blantyre for party convention in 2018.

On Friday, the hearing failed to commence after Magalasi had asked for more time to consult his lawyer on Abuse of office Charge saying he could not understand some clauses in the charge.

Again, his lawyer Andy Kaonga asked for more time to get tested saying he had been in contact with someone who tested positive for Covid19.

Senior Resident Magistrate Shyreen Chirwa then adjourned the matter to today, Monday.

Kaonga said his test results will determine whether he should come to court or not.
