President Dr. Lazarus Chakwera has congratulated Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as World Trade Organization Director-General.
WTO members on 15 February agreed by consensus to select Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala of Nigeria as the organization’s seventh Director-General
When she takes office on 1 March, 2021.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook page Chakwera said Africa is proud Dr. Ngozi’s appointment.
“On behalf of Malawi, I congratulate Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala on her appointment as Director-General for World Trade Organization. As Africans, we are proud to see that the first African to assume this role is also the first woman to do so. Malawi stands with you as you serve,” reads in part the statement.
Her term will expire in August 2025.
