Police in Zomba have arrested two fellow officers for allegedly killing three fishermen and injuring another two during a fracas at Lingani Fishing Dock at Lake Chilwa on Saturday.
In a statement issued by National Police Spokesperson Superintendent James Kadadzera, if investigations prove that the two used excessive force, the accused will be charged with murder.
Kadadzera however, called on the Malawi Human Rights Commission (MHRC) and Independent Police Complaints Commission to jointly investigate the matter to ensure credible findings.
The fracas erupted when the patrol team from Kachulu Police Unit was trying to confiscate fishing gear from fishermen who were defying a fishing ban on Lake Chilwa.
