Malawi Prison Service (PS) has said it is registering a decrease of Covid-19 cases in the country’s collection facilities.

Malawi Prison National Spokesperson Chimwemwe Shaba disclosed the positive development.

According to Shaba, at least 283 cases were recorded in the country’s prisons.

He further added that at least 149 prisoners have recovered from the virus.

As the country was experiencing the second wave of the pandemic earlier this year, the Service suspended relational visits which are still in effect till date as a way of halting the spread of the virus in prisons.

As a way of helping prisoners and officers different stakeholders have been donating PPEs to various prisons across the country.

As a way of decongesting Prisons, former head of Head of State Peter Mutharika and the Incumbent Lazarus Chakwera pardoned a number of inmates.

Malawi has registered close to thirty thousand cases of which over fourteen thousand people have recovered.
