The Mzuzu Youth Caucus has proposed an implementation of life imprisonment sentence to offenders of rape and defilement.

The call comes as police records indicate that the country registered over one thousand five hundred cases of rape and defilement from June to December 2020.

Speaking at a briefing in Mzuzu, Gomegzani Nkhoma, chairperson of the caucus called on the judiciary to enforce section 138 of the penal code which punishes rape and defilement offenders with a life imprisonment.

Nkhoma said enforcing the section will help in reducing cases of rape and defilement that the country has been experiencing.

He then disclosed that the caucus is planning to petition parliament on the need to harmonize the age limit of a child as the constitution and the penal code do not speak to each other.
