Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) is expected to hold a press briefing today at 5:30 pm in the capital Lilongwe, Face of Malawi can reveal.

This publication understands that the impromptu press briefing is a reaction to what Minister of education Agnes NyaLonje has said in Parliament regarding teachers demands on risk allowance.

After government directed that all schools must reopen, teachers said they will not report for work unless government considers their concerns.

When schools reopen on February 22, 21, teachers did not report for work since their demands were not respected.

Meetings to convince teachers to call off their strike has proved futile.

Today, Minister NyaLonje said that government will not give teachers risk allowances adding that the demand is pointless.

NyaLonje has however, said that teachers will be prioritized for the AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccine.

She has however committed that her ministry will continue to decongest classes and recruit more teachers.
