In a tragic incident reported from Madurai district of Tamil Nadu, a 48-year-old woman died by suicide after being allegedly harassed by her landlord for not paying house rent. Police have registered a case of abetment to suicide against the now-deceased woman’s landlord.

According to the police, the deceased, identified as P Umamageshwari, resided in a house owned by T Nagalakshmi of Nagamalai Pudukottai area in Madurai. Umamageshwari had not paid the house rent for the last two months. Nagalakshmi would often pick up arguments with her over the unpaid rent. Later, Umamageshwari sought some more extension of time from Nagalakshmi for paying rent.

On Wednesday, Nagalakshmi again picked up an argument with Umamageshwari. She allegedly disconnected the water supply to the house and told Umamageshwari to leave the place. After this, Umamageshwari allegedly ended her life by hanging herself in the house.

Later, Umamageshwari’s husband, identified as V Pandi (58), approached the police with his complaint against Nagalakshmi. On the basis of his complaint, the police have booked Nagalakshmi for abetment to suicide under the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The case is being probed.

In another incident, a retired Indian Foreign Service (IFS) officer allegedly committed suicide by allegedly shooting himself with his licensed pistol at his residence in Delhi’s Defence Colony.

Police said that around 7:25 am on Wednesday, they were informed that a person had shot himself in a house in Defence Colony. When the police reached the spot, the elderly man was alive. Enquiries revealed that his name was Ranjeet Sethi (81), a retired IFS officer. Police immediately dashed him to a nearby hospital, following which he died.
