Malawi Prison Service has said property worth K87 million was lost during the fracas that ensued at its training school at Mapanga, Blantyre in January this year.
During the spike of coronavirus cases in the second wave of the pandemic, government proposed that Mapanga Prison Training School, should be used as the quarantine center for returnees from South Africa.
The first cohort of returnees went rogue just a day after they were placed at the facility demanding for their passports and release.
Due to the disagreements that erupted, the angry returnees started vandalizing properties at the Training school which resulted to the arrest of the ring leaders.
The uncompromising group burnt a guard room, beds and mattresses at the facility as well as smashing several vehicles on the Limbe-Zomba road.
