Copyright Society of Malawi (COSOMA) has been conducting raids across the country following the upsurge of reproduction and distribution of copyrighted works without a license and the outcry of artists particularly musicians who are suffering economic losses.

In Mzuzu last week on Wednesday 24th February 2021. COSOMA Inspectors impounded computers and other gadgets that facilitate such illegal acts which is contrary to section 113 of the Copyright Act 0f 2016.

The operation which was conducted in some locations of Mzuzu city namely Chiputula, Zolozolo, Mchengautuba, Masasa and Mzuzu Bus depot was done with an aim of enforcing the copyright law which discourages illegal distribution of sound recordings through soft copy for commercial purposes.

During the exercise the copyright inspectors managed to confiscate more than 50 CPUs and 15 laptops which were all being used in the malpractice.

According to COSOMA Assistant Licensing Officer for the Northern region, Mr. Dick Kachipande the exercise is an ongoing one up until piracy has been culminated and the owners of such works are fully benefitting from their sweat.
