Mangochi first Grade Magistrate court has slapped a 22 year old man Sinoya Daimon to 30 months imprisonment with hard labor for causing death by reckless riding.
During the proceedings, Eastern Region prosecutor inspector, Assistant superintendent Peter Piringu told the court that the on February 2, 2021, the accused was riding unregistered and uninsured motorcycle.
“The accused was coming from Namwera heading to the main roundabout carrying two passengers and upon arrival at Pep store he hit a 62-year old who was crossing to the other side of the road due to over speeding “. Said Piringu.
Prosecutor Piringu added that, following the impact, the victim. Sustained head injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mangochi district hospital.
Appealing before court, the accused pleaded guilty to the charges which were levelled against him.
In mitigation, Daimon asked for leniency saying that he is a breadwinner for the family. However the state objected his request arguing that his behavior terminated an innocent person’s life.
Passing the judgment, First Grade Magistrate Roy Kakutu concurred with the state and sentenced Daimon to 30months IHL for reckless riding and 8 months for riding uninsured motorcycle and without a licence.
The convict will save the sentence concurrently.
Sinoya Daimon hails from katema village Traditional Authority Mponda in Mangochi.
