The Blantyre Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court has sentenced a Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) cleaner to serve a nine-month jail term for stealing computers and exchange control stamps from the Central bank’s offices, Blantyre branch.

The court heard that between the months of October 2020 to March 2021, the bank experienced theft incidents which investigators suspected the convict to be behind it.

The stolen items included 8 computer rams, an external hard drive and 2 Exchange control stamps.

This led to the Bank’s investigators to probe the theft which eventually suspected the Bank’s office cleaner, Wonderful Mpalira, to be the one behind it.

Mpalira pleaded guilty of theft.

In his submission, Sub inspector Kanyinji asked the court to melt a custodial sentence on the suspect since the stolen items were not recovered.

Passing his sentence, Senior Resident magistrate Akya Mwanyongo concurred with the state, as such a custodial jail term of 9 months Imprisonment with Hard Labour is fit for the convict.

Mpalira was working as a cleaner at the bank but attached to a private company.

He hails from Muhilili village, Traditional Authority Chikowi in Zomba district.
