Former Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) Commissioner Linda Kunje has responded to her firing from the electoral body saying it is politically motivated.

Yesterday, the Office of the president through ecretary to the government Zangazanga Chikhosi released a statement communicating that Kunje and her colleague Jean Mathanga have been fired form the electoral body.

The two were re-appointed by former president Peter Mutharika in 2020 ahead of the fresh presidential elections after they were found incompetent by the Public Affair Committee of Parliament for mismanaging May 21, 2019 elections.

Their incompetence was further cemented by a decision by the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Despite being found incompetent, Mutharika drafted the two into the new commission, a move that attracted a lot of controversy.

Gospel Kazako, Minister of Information has said the decision by government is only ensuring that the rule of law is followed.

In her remarks Kunje branded her firing from the commission as political and has since said she is consulting on her next move whether to challenge the decision by government or not.
