The Malawi Police Service (MPS) has announced that at least 14 people have been arrested following their involvement in misusing the infamous K6.2 billion Covid-19 funds.
James Kadadzera, National Police Spokesperson has confirmed of the development in a press statement made available to this publication.
According to Kadadzera, the effect of the arrests was made following the exercise by National Auditors Office.
“The Malawi Police is informing the Malawians of the arrests being made on individuals suspected to have abused Covid-19 funds meant for the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic,” said Kadadzera.
He added; “so far, fourteen have been arrested. They include: Mr. Prince Mtelela, Administration officer in the Office of President and Cabinet, Mrs. Pudenciana Makalamba, Commissioner in the department of Immigration and Citizenship Services, Mr. Mzati Nkolokosa former Director of Information and Mr. Martin Mainja of Pest Chem 1B.”
Kadadzera further added that other arrests have been made in districts councils of Blantyre, Thyolo, Zomba, Machinga, Ntcheu, Dedza and Salima.
He has since assured the public that Police detectives are on the ground and more arrests are yet to be made.
The police publicist has said that all the suspect will be charged with theft by public servant among other charges.
The country’s president Lazarus Chakwera has also stressed that his administration will not shield anyone involved in corruption activities.
