Two police officers are in police custody for allegedly for allegedly shooting into a crowd and killing one person and injuring another in the process.
The shooting occurred Sunday evening around Illovo Luwinga Station in Mzuzu after the police allegedly stopped a suspected thief.
It is reported that the suspect civilian was carrying iron sheets when police stopped him demanding proof of ownership. A crowd began forming on the scene and with it rising anger.
Trying to scare the crowd, one of the officers fired live shots injuring two civilians. One was declared dead on arrival at a nearby hospital.
National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera confirmed of the arrest in a statement made available to faceofmalawi.
“The Malawi Police Service (MPS) is informing Malawians that two of its officers have been arrested for allegedly shooting into a crowd and killing one person.
“Presently the two officers, are in police custody at Mzuzu Police Station pending investigations,” reads in part the statement.
Meanwhile the other victim is receiving treatment at Mzuzu Central Hospital.
