A former minister from the Democratic Republic of Congo has been arrested as part of an investigation into corruption in the education ministry.

Willy Bakonga was detained at the main airport in the neighbouring Congo-Brazzaville.

The arrest follows the recent sentencing of two public education officials to 20 years in prison for embezzlement.

President Felix Tshisekedi made the provision of free primary education one of his key policies.

In February the World Bank said it was suspending the first tranche of its $100m (£72m) payment to help fund the programme because of fraud and corruption.
