Human Rights organization under the banner Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) has postponed its demonstrations slated for April 29, 2021.
The postponement of the protests have been made in a press statement signed by the coalition’s leadership.
According to HRDC, the decision to postpone the demonstrations has come after President Lazarus Chakwera addressed most of their demands in the president’s speech on Sunday earlier this week.
HRDC has also added that the move by the Malawi Police Service to arrest people who were mentioned in the report on the abuse of Covid funds is a contributing factor.
However, HRDC has said it will continue to monitor efforts to address, not only the plunder of Covid-19 funds, but also efforts to decisively deal with corrupt practices in the public sector.
HRDC planned national wide demonstrations to force government to act on the report by National Audit Office (NAO) on how Covid-19 funds were used.
