Truck drivers in the country have called off their nationwide demonstrations scheduled for todya April 26, 2021.

Both government officials and representatives of the disgruntled group have confirmed of the development.

The truck drivers want the government to address issues of low salaries, lack of business for Malawian transporters, examinations when renewing professional driving permits and high Covid-19 certificate fee among others.

Chairperson for government taskforce on the negotiations Richard Hara said the government has asked for more time to look into the concerns.

Both spokesperson for professional drivers union Steven Tembo and chairman for Truck drivers association Major Mkandawire also confirmed that the demos have been suspended to give dialogue a chance.

Last Friday, the two sides met in Lilongwe to try and resolve the issues but the meeting which was chaired by deputy minister of Transport and Public Works Nancy Mdooko ended in a stalemate.
